"Cannot find REMIND.EXE" or
"REMIND: Invalid Schedule File"

Problem

Error messages:
"Cannot find C:\REGISTER\REMIND.EXE as specified in WIN.INI..."
          - or -
"Invalid Schedule File (REMIND.SCH)"

Occurs

At Startup

Effects

Various Aptiva models with the IBM Registration software

Cause

Commonly caused by a user deleting or moving the C:\REGISTER or
C:\IBMTOOLS\REGISTER directory which contains the IBM registration software included to remind you to register your Aptiva PC with IBM

Solution

(A) Older Aptivas (includes 2176-Cxx)
  1. Click Start > Click Run > Type SYSEDIT
  2. Choose the WIN.INI file
  3. Place a semicolon [;] at the beginning of the
    load= line so that it appears as:

    ;load=C:\REGISTER\REMIND.EXE

  4. Click File > Click Save

(B) Newer Aptivas (includes 2137-Exx)

  1. Right-Click on your Start button > Click Open
  2. Double-Click on your Programs Folder
  3. Double-Click on your StartUp Folder
  4. Delete or Drag the "Remind" or "Register"
    shortcut OUT of the StartUp folder

More Info

If there is more than one program on the load= line, create a
second load= line containing the other program(s). For example:

Before:
load=C:\LAUNCHPD\LPOCKER.EXE C:\REGISTER\REMIND.EXE

After:
load=C:\LAUNCHPD\LPOCKER.EXE
;load=C:\REGISTER\REMIND.EXE

Alternate directions for Windows 98 users:

  2. Choose the Startup tab
  3. Uncheck the box next to load=   C:\Register\Remind
  4. Click OK > Answer Yes to restart the computer
