56k SUPPORT FOR
MWAVE STINGRAY
MWAVE Parrot 20E drivers and 56k Upgrade
Hey, hey.....56k!!!

Cyber-A, makers of the MWAVE Parrot, a multifunction card based on the Stingray chipset that comes in 2159-Sxx and a few other Aptiva models has released its own version of the 20E drivers.

While the drivers themselves seem fairly equal to IBM's release, the advantage to the Parrot 20E is that after installing an upgrade file can be applied to provide support for faster connection speeds.

The feedback I have gotten from users trying the Cyber-A 20E with the 56k patch has users generally reporting speeds betweek 38-42k, with the fastest speed noted being 44k.
Anyone considering installing these drivers must realize up front that these are NOT IBM supplied drivers and will NOT be supported by IBM (but then again IBM's 20E is not supported by the IBM HelpCenter, so you're not losing that much there).
Cyber-A also will provide NO support
for non-customers, so please do NOT
contact them if you have problems.

DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING NEW20E.ZIP
  1. Download NEW20E.ZIP to an empty folder on your harddrive
  2. Use an UNZIP program to extract the file. If you don't have such a program, DOWNLOAD WinZip 7.0
  3. Extracting the file will result in the creation of 5 subdirectories. Copy the contents of each of the folders Disk1-4 to blank 3.5" diskettes
  4. You will find a ReadMe on Disk1. This contains install directions (basically the same as the IBM steps found HERE)
  5. Follow the steps carefully to install the Parrot 20E drivers.
DOWNLOADING AND INSTALLING MODEM56K.ZIP
  1. Download MODEM56K.ZIP to the same folder you did NEW20E.ZIP.
  2. Use WinZip or similar program to extract the MODEM56K directory from the MODEM56K.ZIP file
  3. AFTER installing the Parrot 20E drivers, open the MODEM56K folder in Windows Explorer and Double-Click on the file MODEM56K.EXE
  4. The "56K Modem Update" window will appear. Click Yes to Restart your computer and click OK
  5. 56K Modem support is now installed and functional
NOTE: The 56K file will NOT work with IBM's 20E drivers, and
will NOT work on any Aptivas with the MWAVE DOLPHIN card.

Installing this file under those circumstances will result in:

56K Modem update NOT performed! It is not allowed with your present installation
