F-PROT

The free F-PROT antivirus software from Frisk detects standard DOS/Windows viruses, Word and Excel macro viruses and Trojan Horses for a total coverage against over 63,700 threats. This level of coverage is comparable to the (not-free & resource hungry) Symantec Norton AntiVirus software.

F-PROT itself is a DOS-based scanner which is designed to be run manually (it does NOT load and run constantly in the background such as Norton and other Windows-based scanners do, which for some users is a plus) however more advanced users of DOS command line programs can load F-PROT via batch files either at startup or at preset intervals.

For those users more comfortable with more conventional Windows software Frisk now offers a separate Windows GUI-based antivirus package, FP-WIN. Unlike F-PROT Frisk's FP-WIN software is not available totally free of charge for non-commercial home users, however a free TRIAL version is available.

Download Instructions:

  1. Download F-PROT.ZIP to your hard drive
  2. Use WinZip or similar UNZIP utility to extract the contents of
F-PROT.ZIP to a permanent location on your hard drive
  3. F-PROT.EXE can be run directly as is from a command prompt or DOS box
More Information:

The F-PROT anti-virus package consists of:

  • F-PROT.EXE - The main program (DOS version)
  • SIGN.DEF - DOS/Windows virus search/disinfection data
  • SIGN2.DEF - DOS/Windows virus search/disinfection data
  • MACRO.DEF - Word/Excel virus search/disinfection data
  • ENGLISH.TX0 - Data file for English language support
  • *.TXT files - ReadMe documentation files
  • *.ASC files - PGP signature files
Things to Note

As of version 3.07b the freeware F-PROT download is now a much smaller file containing the free DOS-based F-PROT scanner ONLY. With the release of FP-WIN the setups for the optional Windows-based scanners F-MACROW and F-STOPW are no longer included in the freeware F-PROT archive.

The absence of these apps in no way diminishes the ability of
F-PROT to detect and remove Word and Excel macro viruses as
F-PROT provides comprehensive coverage for these threats.

Running F-PROT:

If the F-PROT program is run in interactive mode, you get a screen which shows the available functions. You can use the arrow keys to move around the screen, and press when you wnat to select an action:

  • SCAN - When [Scan] is selected, you get a menu where you can specify where to search for viruses, and what to do when a virus is found. See the file SCAN.TXT for further information.

  • OPTIONS - When [Options] is selected, you get a menu where you can enable or disable various options. To change an option, move the red line over it, using the arrow keys and press [ENTER].

  • INFORMATION - When [Information] is selected you get a list of several subjects you can select to get more detailed information about the program.

  • QUIT - Finally, selecting [Quit] will terminate the program.
F-PROT can also be run automatically from a command line or a batch file using the following command line switches:
Usage: F-PROT [drive, file or directory] [options]

/APPEND Append to existing report file
/ARCHIVE Scan inside .ZIP and .ARJ files
    /AUTO Automatic virus removal
/BEEP Beep when a virus is found
    /COLLECT Scan a virus collection
    /DELETE Delete infected files
    /DISINF Disinfect whenever possible
/DUMB Do a "dumb" scan of all files
/FREEZE "Freeze" the program if a virus is found
    /HARD Scan the hard disk(s)
    /HELP Display this list
    /INTER Force interactive mode
    /LIST List all files checked
/NOBOOT Do not scan boot sectors
/NOBREAK Do not abort scan if ESC is pressed
    /NOFILE Do not scan files
/NOFLOPPY For use on system without floppy drives
    /NOHEUR Disable heuristics
/NOMEM Do not scan memory for viruses
    /NOSUB Do not scan subdirectories
    /PACKED Unpack compressed executables
    /RENAME Rename infected COM/EXE files to VOM/VXE
/REPORT= Send the output to a file
/TYPE Ignore extensions of Word/Excel files
    /VIRLIST List the known viruses
    /VIRNO Count the known viruses
/WRAP Wrap text so the report fits in 78 columns
    /PAGE Pause after each page
/SILENT Do not generate any screen output
/REMOVEALL Remove all macros from all documents
/REMOVENEW Remove all macros from infected documents
/SAFEREMOVE Remove macros from all documents if virus is found

    example:

    F-PROT /HARD /AUTO /BEEP /REPORT=VIRLOG.TXT
Adding the above line to a batch (*.BAT) file stored in the same folder as F-PROT.EXE would cause F-PROT to automatically scan all hard drives and beep if a virus is found. Viruses found will be removed automatically if possible and a log containing details will be kept in a file named "virlog.txt" in the F-PROT folder.

A shortcut to such a file set to run minimized and close on exit would be an easy way to run automatic scans. Such a shortcut can be loaded from the Startup folder to run a scan each time the system is booted or launched via System Agent/Task Scheduler on a regular basis at times set by the user.

Running F-PROT From Floppy Disks:

While the files necessary to run F-PROT exceed the capacity of a single 1.44MB floppy disk F-PROT can be run from diskette using either a set of two disks (without Word/Excel macro virus coverage) or a set of three disks (with Word/Excel macro virus coverage).

Instructions for F-PROT disks (two-disk set)
  1. Copy the following four files to disk #1:

    • F-PROT.EXE
    • ENGLISH.TX0
    • SIGN2.DEF
    • NOMACRO.DEF

  2. Rename the NOMACRO.DEF file on disk #1 MACRO.DEF

  3. Copy the following file to disk #2:

    • SIGN.DEF

  4. To run F-PROT insert disk #1 > Go to an A:\> prompt in DOS > Type F-PROT /LOADDEF and tap ENTER. Follow the prompts, inserting disk #2 when requested.
NOTE: Disk #1 can be a bootable system disk (961kb free space required for F-PROT files) created on a non-infected PC, allowing
F-PROT to be run from diskette bypassing possibly infected files on
the hard disk altogether.

Instructions for F-PROT disks (three-disk set)
  1. Copy the following three files to disk #1:

    • F-PROT.EXE
    • ENGLISH.TX0
    • MACRO.DEF

  2. Copy the following file to disk #2:

    • SIGN2.DEF

  3. Copy the following file to disk #3:

    • SIGN.DEF

  4. To run F-PROT insert disk #1 > Go to an A:\> prompt in DOS > Type F-PROT /LOADDEF and tap ENTER. Follow the prompts, inserting disks #2 and #3 when requested.
NOTE: Disk #1 can be a bootable system disk (853kb free space required for F-PROT files) created on a non-infected PC, allowing
F-PROT to be run from diskette bypassing possibly infected files on
the hard disk altogether.

Updating F-PROT:

The virus signature/definition files can be kept current by downloading the following two files (which are updated regularly) and extracting them to the directory to which you extracted the F-PROT.EXE program (allowing the newer files to overwrite the existing copies):

  1. ~MACRDEF2.ZIP
    - Contains the latest MACRO.DEF definition file

  2. ~FP-DEF.ZIP
    - Contains the latest SIGN.DEF and SIGN2.DEF definition files

FP-WIN
For users more comfortable with the Windows graphical interface F-PROT is now available in a Win95/98 version. While the DOS-based freeware version above can be used under Win9x some folks prefer the point-n-click aspect of the Win GUI and FP-WIN may be preferred.

Note that this is a free trial, unlike F-PROT which is totally free for all non-commercial home users FP-WIN is "try before you buy" shareware.
