The Aptiva comes with A LOT of bundled software. It seems that IBM
attempted to please every possible niche in the market. Unfortunately,
this means the pre load can reach upward of 600 Meg on some systems.
Most of this software can be deleted easily by trying these steps;
Start with #1 and proceed to the next step if the prior step does not
work:
Windows 95
- First check the Add/Delete Programs option in the Control Panel. If
it is listed, highlight it and click delete. Windows95 will delete the
program and corresponding registry entries.
- Check the program directory for an Un install program. If one exists, run it to remove the application.
- As a last resort, delete the program directory in Explorer and
corresponding icons. Restart your system. If you get error messages at
startup, see below for Registry search instructions.
Windows 3.1
- Check the program directory for an Uninstall program. If it is there, use it to delete the application.
- Delete the directory and corresponding icons manually.
On any system, the following directories SHOULD NOT be deleted and deletion may cause problems (meaning a full restore off CD)
- \DOS - On Windows 3.1 systems. This is needed for WIndows 3.1 to run.
- \Windows - For obvious reasons.
- \Helper - Aptiva system files.
- \IBMTOOLS - This directory contains software to control Rapid Resume, Standby, Etc.
- \Welcome - contains many fonts and necessities.
- \PS1TOOLS - This directory contains software to control Rapid Resume, Standby, Etc.
- \Recovery - Contains the software needed to create recovery diskettes.
- \MWW - Contains the Mwave drivers for Windows.
- Anything in the root directory, unless you know exactly what it is. *See note below*
Generally, everything else can be deleted. Make sure you
back up the file or directory first, then delete away.
If you manually delete on Windows95 systems, remember:
It goes into the Recycle Bin and is not really off
your hard drive until you empty the Bin.
Special Notes
Rapid Resume
If you chose to disable Rapid Resume and
Standby, you can reclaim approximately 1 meg plus the amount of memory
you have. To do this:
- Edit AUTOEXEC.BAT REM out the following lines:
C:\PS1TOOLS\RESUME.EXE
C:\PS1TOOLS\PS1PFILE.EXE
- Restart your system.
- Delete the hidden _PS1SAVE.DAT file from root C:\
Super Secret space reclaim:
On some Win95 systems, IBM chose to place the ENTIRE Win95 install set
into the \WINDOWS\OPTIONS directory for convenience. You can delete
these files and reclaim
about 35 Meg of space IF you have an alternate install set, such as
diskettes or the install CD. To delete the files:
- Locate the \WINDOWS\OPTIONS subdirectory in Explorer.
- Delete all files with the extension .CAB
- The next time you change the Win95 system, the Aptiva will
attempt to look in this directory. It will give an error when it does
not find the files. Simply direct it to check in the drive where the
install set is (CD or diskette).
Registry Search:
If you manually delete a program under Windows 95, you may get startup
errors. If this occurs, record the name of the lost file then follow
these steps. Warning! This includes modifying your Registry so make very sure you know what you are doing!
- Back up your Registry with ERU, Etc.
- Run the Regedit.exe program from the Windows directory.
- Select the FIND option from the drop down menus and type in the name of the missing file.
- Start the find process. This may take a while.
- When the key containing the file name is found, right click on the key and delete it.
- Exit Regedit and restart. If you get the same error, repeat
the above steps. If you get a new error, use your Registry backup
utility to replace what you deleted.
Startup Errors
On some Aptivas, there are special circumstances where deletes may cause startup errors. These are as follows:
- Quicken - Fix: Edit WIN.INI and remove the entry C:\QUICKENW\BILLMNDW.EXE in the load= line.
- Launchpad - Fix: Edit WIN.INI and remove the entry C:\LAUNCHPD\LPLOCKER in the load= line.
