IBM sells a CD that will upgrade your Aptiva Mxx from Win/OS2 to Windows
95. The CD costs approximately $50.00 and includes a start up diskette.
You MUSTpurchase the Windows 95 CD separately, as the IBM CD does not include Windows 95. Further, you MUST
have the Windows 95 CD, and not the diskette version, as the diskette
drive on you system will be occupied by the IBM upgrade diskette during
the Aptiva upgrade process.
The CD corrects most of what needs to be re-written on your system to
create compatibility with Windows 95. However, it does not do all that
you would hope. It does not, for example, delete many of the small,
unneeded files in the PS1TOOLS directory used by Windows 3.1 but not
Windows 95.
If you wish to purchase this CD, call 1-800-772-2227 and meander through
the telephone tree until you come to the Aptiva service option. When
you reach a service representative, ask for the Aptiva Windows 95 update
CD, also known as part #42H2531. Do not attempt to order the CD through
PC Direct. They will have no idea what you are talking about.
Caution
This may not be the easiest choice, if my experience
is any indication. I ordered the CD and went through three months of
hell dealing with incompetent and unknowledgeable Service Line people, a
double charge on my credit card, and an order that was mysteriously
cancelled. When I finally received the CD, Service Line people didn't
even seem to have record that I had been sent the product. However, I
would hope that IBM has since cleaned up the process.
