DriveSpace VxD Mismatched

Problem

DriveSpace Warning

The DriveSpace VxD and the DriveSpace real-mode driver are mismatched. You may need to reinstall them.

Generally systems on which Windows has been reinstalled or the \Windows directory restored using RESTORE.EXE

Cause

The DriveSpace3 disk compression utility included with the MS Plus! for Win95 software preloaded on many Aptivas installs it's own
real-mode drivers. When Windows 95 is reinstalled or the C:\Windows folder is restored the copy of Drvspacx.vxd (the DriveSpace VxD) in the Iosubsys folder is incompatible with DriveSpace3

Solution

There are two possible solutions:

1- Reinstall Microsoft Plus!

Within the C:\Program Files\Plus!\Setup folder is a Setup.exe for Plus!. Running that file by Double-Clicking on it and choosing Install will resolve the error

2- Replace the Drvspacx.vxd file

At startup tap the F8 key when you see "Starting Windows 95" and choose Command Prompt Only.

Type the following commands, tapping [ENTER] after each:

REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS\DRVSPACX.VXD DRVSPACX.OLD

EXTRACT C:\PROGRA~1\PLUS!\SETUP\CABS\PLUS_1.CAB DRVSPACX.VXD /L C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IOSUBSYS

Restart your computer normally

If the error message persists, check for a file named Dblspace.bin dated 7/11/95 or earlier. This is a hidden file in root C:\. If this file exists, rename it to Dblspace.old and restart. DriveSpace 3 does not require this file to mount compressed volumes, but Win95 processes Dblspace.bin before Drvspace.bin if both files exist

Important Note: Solution (1) is for users of Windows 95 ONLY. Do NOT install or reinstall Microsoft Plus! for Win95 under Windows 98!
