CREATING START MENU SHORTCUTS
How can I put a shortcut to a frequently
used program or file on my Start Menu?
There are several different ways:
Create a shortcut directly in the Start Menu folder
- Right-Click on your Start button
- Click Open
This will open your Start Menu folder
C:\Windows\Start Menu
in a "Windows Explorer-style" format
- Double-Click on your Programs folder
- Double-Click on the folder where you
want the Shortcut
- Right-Click in that folder
- Point to New
- Click Shortcut
- If you know the exact PATH to the file/program,
Type that as the Command Line and skip to Step 8
- If you don't know the PATH, Click the Browse button
- Browse to the folder where the file or program you
want the shortcut to is located and Click on it to select it
Note: If this shortcut is to be to a file other than an .EXE
[program] pull down the menu where it says "Files of type"
and change it from "Program" to "All Files"
- Click Open
- Click Next
- Choose the Name you want for the Shortcut
- If an icon is not preselected for you Click Next
- Select an Icon for your Shortcut
(from a small selection of Icons...you can Customize it later)
- Click Finish
Your Shortcut is created
Create a Start Menu shortcut via Taskbar Properties
- Click START
- Go to SETTINGS
- Click TASKBAR
(OR Right Click on an empty spot on the TASKBAR
and Click PROPERTIES---this is the same thing)
- Click on the START MENU PROGRAMS tab
- Click the ADD button
- Click the BROWSE button
- A Windows Explorer type Window will open
Browse to C:\XXX (the location of your program)
- Click on your file ["yourprogram.exe"] to select it
- Click OPEN
- Click NEXT
- Click on the existing folder that
you would like this SHORTCUT in
OR
Click on NEW FOLDER
(and give this folder a NAME)
- Click NEXT
- Give your Shortcut a NAME
- Click FINISH
You now have a SHORTCUT
on your START MENU
In START MENU PROGRAMS you can also:
REMOVE shortcuts to programs you have deleted
ADVANCED (Modify the START MENU): Rename
shortcuts and move them from one folder to another
Create a Start Menu shortcut via Drag 'n' Drop
Finally, if you have a Window Open which contains a
PROGRAM that you wish to create a Desktop Shortcut to:
(This will only work for PROGRAMS, not text or other files)
- Right-Click on your Start button
- Click Open
this will open your Start Menu folder
C:\Windows\Start Menu

- Double-Click on your Programs folder
- Double-Click on the folder where you
want the Shortcut
- With the two windows open Right-Click
on the taskbar and Click Cascade Vertically
- Now just Drag the programs .EXE Icon
and Drop it in the Start Menu folder
- Right-Click on the Shortcut
- Click Rename and change the Name
from "Shortcut to xxx" to "xxx
Now that you have your shortcuts set up you
can customize them by using some cool icons
