Option One:
Let's start off with the best option...complete replacement of both modem and sound card.
Uninstall Directions
- Rip out the MWAVE card
- Pulverize it with a sledge hammer or similar household utensil
- Soak it in kerosene and/or charcoal lighter fluid and ignite it
- Bury the MWAVE's ashes in a grave a minimum of 4 meters down
- Cover the grave with 6 inches of cement
- Post a 24hour armed guard to ensure zero chance of resurrection
- Install a USR 56k modem and a SoundBlaster AWE64
- ...and they all lived happily ever after. THE END
Option Two:
Install a second internal modem and retain MWAVE as your sound card. Configure your second modem to use COM PORT 2 and IRQ 3.
"You can get a 2-in-1 phone jack from any
hardware store to enable you to use both modems. I use my US Robotics
to surf the net and my Mwave for fax and phone applications.
I don't have any real complaints about MWave as a "sound card", but
wanted a faster modem. I bought a U.S.Robotics Speedster 56K and plugged
it into the open slot below my MWAve and had it programmed and working
in about 15 minutes. The only function I seem to have lost is using my
computer as a phone, but who needs that. The modem on a normal phone
connection connects to AOL at 46666 and I still get all the sound
through the MWave. It may have cost
$170 but it sure beats having to replace the sound card as well."

Option Three:
Install a new sound card and keep MWAVE as your modem. This is the most
difficult to confiqure and likely the least desirable of the options,
but (dispite what IBM techs may say) it CAN be done:
"You cannot disable the SOUND
CARD portion of the Mwave and install another card for sound. You would
need to remove the Mwave card in order to prevent conflicts."
- IBM technician
"You CAN selectively uninstall features in Mwave. To remove the sound
part of Mwave, go into Device Manager and double-click SOUND VIDEO and
GAME CONTROLLERS. A list will drop down. Double click on each device,
and remove the check from the box that says ORIGINAL CONFIGURATION
(CURRENT).
You can then install a third party soundcard and use its features. If
it is plug and play, doing the above steps will avoid device conflicts
if you decide to re-enable another part of the Mwave (such as the
gameport)"
- Joe R, Aptiva owner
"That's what I'm doing right now, I installed an AWE64 and am using the
Mwave as the modem. I had trouble with an IRQ conflict, but I solved
that by using the HWConfig.exe and told it the MWave card (SoundBlaster
part) was located at an address of 240 IRQ of 7 DMA of 0. You also have
to set your new Soundcard as a preffered device and use preffered
deviced only. I haven't seen any problems."
