Problem

Error messages:
  • Cannot find C:\CSW6B6\CSDVXD.386
  • Cannot find C:\CSW6B6\CSSAFE95.386
  • Cannot find C:\CSW6B6\CSLDR.386
or
  • Cannot find C:\CSW70\CSDVXD.386
  • Cannot find C:\CSW70\CSSAFE95.386
  • Cannot find C:\CSW70\CSLDR.386

Occurs

At Startup

Effects

Aptiva models with "IBM Online HouseCall"

Cause

These errors are caused by deleting or moving the CSW* directory containing the software for the CoSessions client AKA "IBM Online Housecall"

This directory is named C:\CSW6B6 on 2134 and 2176 models and
C:\CSW70 on 2159, 2161 and 2162 systems

Solution
  1. Click Start > Click Run > Type SYSEDIT > Click OK
  2. Choose the file SYSTEM.INI
  3. About 25-30 lines down you will see this:
    [386enh]
  4. Look under [386enh] for these references:

    DEVICE=C:\CSW6B6\CSLDR.386
    DEVICE=C:\CSW6B6\CSDVXD.386
    DEVICE=C:\CSW6B6\CSSAFE95.386
    (note that you may not have all three lines)

  5. Place a semicolon [;] at the beginning of each line
    So they appear as this:

    ;DEVICE=C:\CSW6B6\CSLDR.386
    ;DEVICE=C:\CSW6B6\CSDVXD.386
    ;DEVICE=C:\CSW6B6\CSSAFE95.386

  6. Click File > Click Save
  7. Restart your computer (these errors should be gone)

More Info

The CoSessions drivers (in particular the device driver CSLDR.386, which you may or may not find loading from SYSTEM.INI) can
cause conflicts with DirectDraw support, causing the error message "Your display driver is not Windows95 compatible".

As "Online Housecall" is such a rarely used for-fee service if desired after disabling the CoSessions drivers as detailed above one can delete the C:\CSW* directory to recover the wasted disk space with no ill effects.
