Comments: I LOVE THESE KINDS OF PAGES!!! I was wondering if any of you could help me out. I'm having a problem with my IBM computer (it's an Aptiva IBM). My computer was running too slow so I decided to get out the "Product Recovery" disk, delete everything and start over. So, I chose "Full Recovery" and it started Inflating and Extracting files. After a few minutes, the following message came up: Appending information to Autoexec failed. ERROR: Cannot locate C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SYS.COM file. 99- An error occurred while files were being uncompressed. A:\> At that point, I restarted the computer without the CD and it read: Invalid system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key It usually says that when a floppy disk is in the drive, but there is none! Now, I can't get into Windows 98 at all! All I can do is go back into that recovery mode with the CD in. Help!!! Here's my computer info: Model: 2158-301 S/N: AF 28403 MFG Date: AN902 I have reason to believe that since my recently installed CD-Re writable drive is causing this problem, because occasionally it says "Not reading Drive G:(my printer drive) and i have to type R for RETRY to get it working again. I've tried everything from re-installing the BIOS to manually installing the file. Please help me! Jason Wall [email protected]

Comments: I've used this site alot to bring my Aptiva back to life. I have a 2168-A92 Aptiva. I've done some modifications to it like putting in a new graphics card that I got my hands on. A while ago, I reformatted the computer, and I couldn't get the "recovery disk" to work. Since then I've installed a copy of Win95 and have put it all together. But I've never figured the disk problem out. And I want to get the Quicken SE that is on the CD. If anyone has some helpful tips, write me an email. [email protected]

Comments: Awww maan.....wish I would've found this awesome site a LONG time ago. I have the E84, at first it was good for nothing; but I used my wits (and fustration) to find my own solutions. Now I'm running AMD K6-2 300Mhz (original CPU and RAM-64MB[Can I add more?]), TDK 121032 CDRW, and two hard drives: Maxtor 30GB (Yes, ALL 30 gigs, not just 8.4![I invented a fix-around!]) and the original 4GB as it's BI**H (slave)! I'm hoping to upgrade this girl's onboard video (an ATI Rage II 2MB) to some PCI card, but do your tricks really work? I don't want to stare at a f'd up monitor. Anyways, I think my 8.4GB limit trick might come in handy to you guys; maybe THE MAN should email me about it, then he can post it to you all! BTW, will the videocard trick work? Thanks!

Comments: Hi, hopefully useful hint: Chance to upgrade graphics of Aptivas with onboard Rage Pro AGP graphics chip; the non-certified driver available from the ATI website version 4.12.2632 (build J5.11.1-b20) gives a noticeable improvement on DirectX games (esp. Lego Racers!). Fewer artifacts and faster frame rate in general

Comments: Thank you Don for putting this site I owe my thanks much to Pat Mannix ([email protected]) in the MHCUG forum bboard:who directed me here. I wished I had known this much earlier. Pat had been helpful in resolving my erratic automatic unsolicitated shutdown and booting loop problem on my Aptiva 2144-930 SL-H( Still using an oldie and yet surviving eh-well recently upgraded to MMX ODP to keep pace). Pat's assistance led me to troubleshoot repair on/off switch and replace the Power supply because of no Power good signal. I got the answer to my Rapid Resume problem now learning that it wont work if I have a compressed drive......Thanks Don! By the way can you tell me why is the Power on Password in my setup utility is disabled by itself and I cant enable it. More over I want to upgrade my Ram from presently 40 MB to 128 MB. The standard installed is 72 pin Simm non parity can I also use EDO? As the manual and the setup utility mentions the option to swith from Standard to EDO but no where does it specifically mentions an upgrade possibility to EDO not even the IBM Hardware Maintenance manual that I downloaded. I am just infering this from the option to EDO from the setup utility etc. Well anyway your site has been extremely useful for me at least its a relief to know that I am not the only loser(joking) out there ownig those Aptivas! Thanks again Don And have a nice weekend Obaid

Comments: SOS! Someone said it before - the IBM site's a jungle. I've got a Netvista 6269 and can't get my Creative Vibra sound card to work properly - when running CoolEdit pro, or Cakewalk, the system hangs after 5 to 10 minutes. Couldn't figure out how to assign IRQs manually. It seems the onboard Intel graphics adapter was affecting things. It shared an IRQ with the Vibra. By juggling slots and fiddling with ISA Resource I managed to separate them and things improved, but the Vibra is still sharing it's IRQ with other Intel applications. I just can't get to assign it to its own IRQ, which I'm hoping would be a solution. Anybody help me? Please ...

Comments: I visited Don's site while he still had the Aptiva upgrade section on there I am glad i printed out and saved the pages for the Aptiva 2137-E26 clock multipliers ans FSB settings because when i was ready to upgrade, i returned to the site and that information was no longer there Anyway ,here is a cheap SUCCESSFUL CPU UPGRADE FOR THE 233 Mhz Aptiva 2137-E26 Use the AMD K6-2 550 MHZ (supposed to be run at FSB 100). First,GO tO THE IBM SITE and DOWNLOAD THE LATEST BIOS update Flash the BIOS as per IBM instructions. After confirming a succesful flash by going to the Bios set up and reading it there ,turn off the computer and disconnect everything;use usual anti-static precautions while working on the computer. Using Don's previous diagrams from this site , SET THE APTIVA MOTHERBOARD FSB TO 83 MHZ; SET THE CLOCK MULTIPLIER TO 2X (it will be read as 6X by the AMD K6-2 550MHZ). You'll end up with a CPU speed of 83x6 or 498MHZ ( due to underclocking the K6-2 by using a lower effective FSB of 83) Therefore your K6-2 will run cooler and you won't need a beefier fan. Just keep on using the one that was in the K6. It was a 20 minutes no hassles upgrade for me; i hope it will be for you too. To play it safe, i installed the freeware Rain 2.0 to load on start up,even thoigh i doubt therecan be any overheating of an underclocked CPU. You have now more than doubled your CPU speed from 233 to 498MHZ,practically 500 Mhz You can confirm this both in the BIOS setting after rebooting a couple of times , or by using WCPUID(freeware) to read it. Total cost about of upgrade : about 55 bucks for the CPU (including shipping; you may find it more cheaply on sale) I've had no problems with peripherals (CDs,CDRW-DVD combo installed in the second bay etc...) nor the computer for the past 3 months of constant use sincr the upgrade. I can now take my time building my other computer. The ~500 MHZ speed is quite livable, especially with high speed internet (cable). Computers with FSB 66mhz are now obsolete; computers based on FSB 100 MHz motherboard are on their way out. By upgrading to FSB 83 MHZ you can still hang in there for a while longer. Thanks Don. Happy upgrading to fellow upgraders.

Although seven files were listed as being needed for the installation of Windows 95 from the companion CD, there was no trace of these files anywhere on the net. Also while boot disks for various OSes were available on the net, the setup disk images for Win9x/ME were not available on the net. The seven files needed for the installation of Windows 95 OSR2 are available zipped as:- http://www.valona.com/files/W95CpnCD.zip which is about 170kb.

I self-made a bunch of simple files of .BAT and placed in various locations of PATHS (TREES branches )and learned big LESSONS unforgettable ! It appears that the TREE itself is already a large netwoek capable of FEED-BACKing to become UNSTABLE. If such view is understandable then could it worth furhter exploring ? Anybody interested ?

DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTION'S ON WHICH ONE'S WOULD WORK, OR ARE COMPATABLE, SO I CAN BACK UP SOME OF MY GOOD STUFF. IT'S A LITTLE SLOW, BUT HAS BEEN VERY RELIABLE OVER THE PAST 4 YEARS. I HATE TO PART WITH IT! DO I SPEND FOR SOME UPGRADE'S OR SCRAP IT OUT!!! NEED HELP DON.... THANK'S BILL

Comments: 1997 purchased an Aptiva 2140 L51. Black I am in need of a new DVD drive 528.retail and Monitor with Butterfly speakers as my speaker is shot. They are not available. When I upgraded from Win 95 to 98SE I lost all the bells & whistles. Purchased from IBM Store & purchased extended warranty but when I needed it found no receipt for it & only an extended warranty on the printer. Why would I have purchased an extended warranty on a 150. purchase & not on a 4000. plus Computer? There was nothing I could do as there was no receipt I trusted the IBM salesman. Traveled 100 miles in a snow storm to pick it up & when I arrived home it was not set up & a cable was missing upon notifying them he accused me of loosing it. So much for dealing direct. Buyers Beware!! 1992 I purchased a PS/1 486 SX 2133 & IBM was swell. Spent hours tutoring no complaints at all. It is still in active use. I call it old reliable. Thanks for the info on parts at EBay will have a look. Great site here.

Comments: Past president of a Computer users club and the receiving end a large number of used computers--which we donated to schools and clubs. The Aptiva 2716-747 (which carries this e-mail) was so impressive I retained it for analysis. It is a very interesting and reliable machine and I am tempted to purchase a late model. And I am a MAC GUY!!!!!

Comments: I haven't gone through the whole site yet. Looking for an Owner's manual for the Aptiva 2137 E85. I'd even take photo copies. Called IBM-ha, ha. I expect this will be a good site. I like my Aptiva, and once after six months I got all the bugs out, I call it honey-pie. It was made well.

Comments: I have a Apteva 2159(black) with no controls on the computer case. The controls are on a seperate THING (3.5 and CD), how can I make this to run like a regular computer. The reason I hesatate is the mother board could be different and not work with the 3.5 and CD in the case. Now there is a large wire from the THING to the case, going to a card on the mother board. OK, I think you have enough information to help me if someone out there has made the change they will know what I am after, thank you in advance for you help. FRANK

Comments: This is Frank from November 17th and 18th with a unique problem. First the computer is running perfect thanks to your tutelage. The new problem is this, first of all I spent about two hours on this new problem and my wife about one hour to no avail! The password, we can not get the computer to open, it asks for the password and stops after three tryes. We always use the same numbers and letters for all our password(S) but in different order. If I change the hard drive will this fix the problem? What do I do? Thanks in advance Frank.
