System LockUps(general) |
System unexplainably "freezes" or "locks up" without producing any error messages, forcing a restart |

Very often lockups are related to graphics display issues or video drivers. The initial general suggestion for unexplained lockups is to try reducing graphics accelleration: Right-Click on My Computer > Click Properties > Choose the Performance tab > Click the Graphics button > Move the "slide bar" a notch to the left If the lockups persist repeat the above moving the slider yet another notch to the left. Continue to do so until either the lockups cease or you run out of notches. If this does not resolve the issue check the IBM website and/or your video card manufacturer for updated display drivers. |
NOTE: On systems where lockups occur online (particularly while scrolling on webpages) and the system has both (a) an ATI 3D Rage graphics adapter and (b) Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.x or 5.x installed see the information HERE first. An excellent reference for the above mentioned graphics issues is Graphics Without Pain. |
