E-Series Win98 FIXED Upgrade FAQ

IBM - Microsoft Windows 98 Upgrade Kit

It has been determined that in some instances the installation of the IBM supplied Windows 98 upgrade can cause 2137-Exx machines to lock up at the Windows Logo screen after installation. Although you may not be experiencing this problem, all existing Windows 98 upgrade CDs are being replaced with an updated copy. The updated CD is being shipped automatically to all customers who were sent the original upgrade from IBM. There is no need to contact IBM to order a replacement CD. If you have not received an upgrade from IBM, you will only receive the updated CD.

Answers to Commonly Asked Questions:

1) What should I do if I haven't installed Windows 98 yet?
If you haven't installed your Windows 98 upgrade yet please wait until you receive the updated CD from IBM.

2) How long will it take to receive my updated version?
You should receive your updated Windows 98 upgrade CD before Sept 25th, 1998.

3) How do I know which CD I have?
The part number on each CD is different as shown below:

The original CDs part number is: X03-36212
The replacement CDs part number is: 730-00748

NOTE: When you receive your updated CD please discard the original one.

4) Why does the original CD cause this to happen?
We have discovered that Microsoft developed two OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions of the Windows Upgrade CD. The original CD, when installed, adjusts a setting in Windows which is not compatible with the hardware in certain Aptiva 2137-Exx systems.

5) Does this apply to all Aptiva systems?
No. This issue will only appear on select 2137-Exx systems. As of the date this document was released, the issue has only been reported on 2137-E84 and 2137-E56 systems (US Only models).

6) Are any other Aptiva systems affected outside of North America?
No. Customers outside of North America have not reported experiencing this issue at this time.

7) Is IBM continuing to ship the Windows 98 Upgrade CD?
As a precaution, IBM stopped the shipment of all IBM-supplied Windows 98 Upgrade CDs worldwide for Aptiva 2137-Exx systems as of August 27th, 1998. Shipments of Upgrade CDs for other Aptiva models continue as normal.

8) Is there anything I can do to prevent or repair problems if I have already installed the original Windows 98 Upgrade CD?

Follow the step by step instructions to manually disable DMA Mode on your computer.

9) What will I receive in the Mail?
Initially you will receive a letter from IBM which explains the problem and what to do. Approximately two weeks later you will receive the updated Windows 98 upgrade CD Rom.

10) If I have a 2137-Exx machine and didn't have any lockup problems when I installed my Windows 98 upgrade what should I do?
If you did not experience this problem when you installed your Windows 98 Upgrade, you should still discard the original CD and use the replacement CD if you ever need to reinstall Windows 98.
