Comments: When it finally became apparent that I needed to upgrade much of my Black Stealth Aptiva 2159, I went to the web to see what I could do myself. Techs were telling me to scrap it, not worth the money or effort etc. You seem to be the only thing keeping hope alive!

Comments: Hi gang, it looks like this is the hot spot for help. I'm helping a friend bring back life to his Aptive 2176-c6b and we're in need of drivers for the 25h5830 sound card and modem combo. I'm not sure about the MB capacity yet but would love to learn how to beef this up. Any help would be appreciated, thanks and Happy New Year everyone.

Comments: (Ex Aptiva user just browsing.) Here's an update for your free antivirus page: www.grisoft.com AVG antivirus is free, works well (at least 18 months on my system) gets regular updates, and has saved my bacon more than one. Get it!

Comments: My computer is an aptiva which is supposedly equal to a pentium 2, when its actually barley as good as a ****ing typewriter!! it takes me over 20 minutes to boot up my computer and get on the net! And thats if the net is working, because sometimes it will just shut down because the computer can't handle it. Aptiva is bull****. i advise ANYONE looking for a computer to stay the HELL away from anything that has to do with aptiva. aptiva will only rip you off like they ripped me off.

Comments: I have an Aptiva Model 216l C8X which needs upgrading and I don't know how to go about it. Since I joined AOL I am running out of memory and Drive C. How can I solve this problem? Who do you recommend? Tried to email IBM but they have not answered my email. I need to know what kind of parts can be used, I think they need to be IBM compatible. Should I go to Future Shop for service or just a computer place at a mall? Did go to one store but they were more interested in selling me a new computer instead. Can the Aptiva be upgraded to a Pentium 3 at least? Hope you can help. Thank you. Koteles

Comments: Found you on usenet A.C.H.Aptiva Cool site, I wasn't sure when you started with desktop tricks but it didn't take long to get to some good stuff. Got an interesting hack in my 2144 A12. Four cards in a 3 card machine. You can let a ISA sound card share a slot with a short Ethernet PCI if you cut out the game plug and take the backstrap off the NIC. Plug them face to face in the 2 slot. Mine's shot black to match the black 7095 I got from PC Surplus Online. I still use it for AOL and Agent.

Comments: Google search turned up your site. Your site is a tremendous asset for my friend and anyone who has an Aptiva system. I found your site while searching for a flash bios update and was pleasantly supplied and reassured that the steps I had taken to update his computer were accurate. You have done a wornderful job preparing the information on this site and I was pleased to find the update file needed plus the others. He had a bug upon start up that caused his system to scan disk and you explained that very well plus had the update driver, too. And there was at least ten other very helful tidbits, etc. Awesome job and congratulations for being a great resource to fellow Aptiva owners. I can't believe how difficult it was to find the information (and how easy it was to open the case once I found the information.) The whole design is nice, but was completely counter-intuitive. I knew that the little latch on the back had something to do with it! Thanks again.

Comments: WARNING: DO NOT INSTAL IE6 IF YOU RUN WIN98. IE6 IS BILL GATES' WIN98 KILLER, 2 FORCE YOU TO "UPGRADE" TO WIN2K. FIGHT THE POWERS THAT BE!!! wow. Your website almost brought tears to my eyes. what a blast from the past. at first when i heard the faint whining sound, i thought it was a cooling fan malfunction, or that my cd drive was somehow being accessed... when the mechanical whining increased in volume, i started looking around to see if the harddrive was off-spinning or something. ...then, the sound became a midi of "Take the long way home". complete with "Route98" logo & crudely drawn toolbox indicative of all the effort i have put into the machine affectionately renamed my IBM CRAPtiva... fastest tweaked win98 computer ive seen on old school hardware. IS THERE ANY WAY TO GET MY crAPTIVA MOTHERBOARD TO RECOGNIZE MORE THAN 128mb of memory? Ive got a few 512 sticks id LOVE to put in there. The constipated gestapo network administrator at my new job has SERIOUS control issues. he sneakily sabotaged my operating system by requiring me to upgrade to the notoriously destructive INTERNET EXPLORER 6 [BEWARE!!!] He was aparently insecure about how my ultratweaked2hyperwarp-speed Win98crAPTIVA was WAY out-performing his entire vanilla installed by-the-microsoft-book wireless Compaq Evo network. ...but that's ok, i am now REBUILDING my win98 UBER-install & THIS time im making a restore cdr on my BURNER. IVE SAVED UP A FEW PAYCHECKS, & AM buying an EPOX EP-8RDA+ WITH CORSAIR MEMORY,& THE FASTEST AMD PROCESSOR AVALIABLE THAT I CAN FIND, WITH AN ATI 9700 ALLINWONDER PRO ON MEMORIAL DAY. [because i heard the 9800aiwp from ati doesnt support win98. bummer, if true.] I'll still use my crAPTIVA to surf the net, as i compute my mission crittical apz from my new Epox mobo-setup. im thinking about putting both in the same case if i can cool it correctly. ...SO HOW DO I UPGRADE MY MEMORY FROM 128MAX TO... SAY 3 512 DIMMs??? i havent browsed your site yet, i wanted to sign your guest book out of gratefulness for the impression i have that YOUR SITE ABSOLUTELY ROX!!! thanks. :D !!! - [email protected]

Replaced 256Kb with 512Kb, P166MMx with P200MMx, and 32Mb with 64Mb, I saved from another IBM 300PL which was scrapped, and put 2 disks of 8,4Gb in, a cd-writer and a Dvdrom. I thought my system was totally maxed out, until last week when I saw another black Aptiva with 80Gb Maxtor and FastOntrack. Time to make my best PC even better ;p

Comments: I recently found an Aptiva 2134 in a Friend's closet and thought I'd take it home and see if I remembered how to install, DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1 and Stacker to recover some files I'd laid on floppies many years ago. It had a bad hard drive and I've several old ones. I decided to replace it. After several hours with a large screw driver and attempts to find a hammer..I came to Your site and had the cover off in seconds. Thanks. Now begins the fun. After I get the cobwebs off enough to find the HD. Many thanks again.

Comments: The best site for Aptiva owners I have ever seen. My Aptiva 2176-352, originally a pentium at 120 mhz, vintage 1996, has rejuvenated with the Donīs advice on processor upgrades. I upgraded with an Evergreen Spectra 400 (AMD K6-2 ant 400 mhz)which is working fine except for the 127 post error. I expect to keep my Aptiva at least for another 5 or 6 years. Don, thanks for your superb site.

At the same time I installed a second hard drive in my machine, saving all my important W98 files. I am now searching for any applicable BIOS updates for my machine, since I can no longer use the Standby mode. The indications are that some unknown device driver (???) is denying the activation of the Standby feature. Any assistance or recommendations will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Menko

Comments: Thank you for the site, it helped me considerably until I discovered the ultimate way to fix 90%(or more) of my Win95 Era Aptiva's Problems. (It's an A50) 1) REMOVE the WRETCHED Mwave Card 2) Replace with Genuine Creative Labs SoundBlaster Card (I used an AWE64) 3) Boot up using your IBM Recovery Floppy 4) Say NO to System Restore 5) Format C:\ 6) Install a Retail Copy of Windows 95 It's amazing how much better the computer runs now that it has no knowledge of ever being an "Aptiva".

Comments: Don , I think I at least owed an explaination , of why I was dropped , and tossed out in the cold from you . You were offering me tech help , as a basic friend , and I was under the impression , that there was no problem ! I have noticed however , that you claimed that you took on a new Internet job , and I was certainly very very Patient with you , as far as Waiting & Waiting & Waiting -FOREVER , for a Reply to arrive ! I NEVER complained , and ONLY asked once in a while , if all was OK , cause I got concerned that you could be Ill or Worse! This was Exactly 5-7 MONTHS ago ! I STILL get NO REPLIES from you , even if I use Different Email Address !!! I am Honestly Totally Confused , & Fully Offended by this behavior from you ! I have Offered MANY times , to arrange to PAY you , for your time , but you STILL will NEVER ANSWER THAT ISSUE !!! I have done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG , and feel that I DESERVE a RESPONCE from you. And *WITHOUT* ATTITUDE either , cause I have seen NUMOUROUS times , when you FLY OFF THE HANDLE , just attempting to Explain a Tech Issue to me ! The Saddest part of all , is that *I* have *NEVER* given you a peice of *MY MIND* back , cause if I ever responded to YOU , like you have at a FEW times responded to ME , with an ATTITUDE , then I am *SURE* that YOU , would *NOT* even REPLY at ALL !!! BUT , it seems that YOU enjoy JUMPING down on MY CASE and yet , I STILL COME CRAWLING BACK , to you , & *WITHOUT* ATTITUDE to boot ! So , with THAT being said , may I *PLEASE* have an EXPLAINATION , of WHY you will NOT REPLY to me ??? I STILL want to be your Friend , and STILL NEED Help at times !!! AGAIN , I have done *NOTHING WRONG* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have EMAIL YOU , EXTENSIVELY , for MONTHS , but they just go UN ANSWERED ! *PLEASE* at LEAST give me an REASON , to WHY you are IGNORING me ! This is VERY IMPORTANT to me Don ! PLEASE !!!!!! THANKS AGAIN , and HAPPY NEW YEAR to you & yours . God Bless !!! ;-) [email protected]

Comments: Hi fellow Aptiva owners: I installed a 2nd (shadowed) HD in my dash 570 machine, and I replaced the Windows 98 OS with Windows 2000 Professional. I also replaced the OEM Rockwell modem with a US Robotics 56K PCI Faxmodem (PN: 3CP5699A). The OS upgrade was a big improvement, and it is a much more stable platform than my standard Windows 98 was. I got everything working great, with the exception of being able to install the new modem drivers software from the US Robotics supplied CD, requiring me to default to the Windows 2000 generic divers. In addition, my machine no longer allows me to use the "Sleep" or Standby feature! Does anyone have a similar experience or any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance. You can E-Mail me backchannel at: [email protected]. Menko Christoph St. Peters, MO P.S. I also tried to contact Don Schneider numerous times via E-Mail, but never recived the courtesy of a reply! Just wondering what gives???

Comments: I generally like my Aptiva. It has been a good computer for me, not much trouble. I installed w/2000 and Office 2000, and they seem to run well. Was getting ready to add a RW drive, and was looking for hints, ect on that. My computer came with a DVD drive, and has what appears to be a support component in the 2nd bay for that drive. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. My system is a 2163-570 with Pentium II.

Comments: Your site is great. I am trying to teach myself Linux so there was nothing left on my 2176-c65. First I upgraded the bios so I can stop using EZ Bios, then I learned that the companion disk will allow me to upgrade to W98 since the Recovery Disk doesn't seem to be working. Thanks very much. George

Comments: I have an IBM Aptiva 2144-M51 PC I am tring to upgrade my cpu to a 200MHz Intel Pentium with MMX, I have the cpu installed but it only clocks at 166MHz. I need to know how I can get this processor to clock at 200MHz. The motherboard has a VRM that can be set with jumpers, but I can't find any info on where to place the jumpers to set the VRM for a certain voltage. I found one jumper, so far, on the motherboard seprate from the VRM, that I had to set to get it to clock at 166MHz, befor it would only clock at 133MHz.
